I'm figuring out what to do with my life one list at a time.

Has there been one moment of clarity where I woke up in the middle of the night and jumped out of bed knowing what I’m suppose to do and how I’m suppose to do it? Well, there wasn’t one. I didn’t wake up one morning and have all the answers to life. But instead slowly - and I mean slowly - day by day I spent time by myself thinking, writing and meditating to figure things out.

Maybe you aren’t into meditating or struggle sitting still in the quiet. That’s okay, you don’t have to start there. Start by dedicating 10 minutes a day to being by yourself with no distractions and THINK. Think about where your life is at, what you like about and what you wish was different.

Dive a little deeper and think about WHY you like the things you like and think about where you want your life to end up. To get a little morbid, think about the impact you want your life to have after you’re gone.

Maybe it’s fun with friends, close family or making lots of money. Whatever it is think about what you have to change in your current life to have these things.

These 10 minutes a day of thinking about yourself and what you want will get easier. You will get to point where you can be productive with these thoughts. I started by writing everything down - and I mean everything.

I started writing these lists:

• Things I want

• Things I don’t want

• Things that make me happy.

• Where I want to end up or what I want my life to look like

Where I want to end up or what I want my life to look like. This was the big one. What do I actually want my life? What kind of impact do I want to leave behind? This is the one I’m still figuring out. I started somewhere smaller. I’ve dedicate more time in my day to day life that makes me happy. The happier you are the more energized you will be allowing yourself to be in a good state to start making the changes in your life.

Starting this process to where I’m at now, my lists have changed and they will continue to change. As we grow and learn more about ourselves, try new things and are at different places in our lives this will make our lists different. This is why it is important to keep this is an ongoing process. By constantly checking in with yourself to asses these lists and seeing where you’re at is a great way to make sure you are on the right path.

So how do you implement all these things on all these list? Start small and stick with the mundane. If something that makes you happy is walking your dog. Make sure you are scheduling in daily walks with your dog. It’s that easy. Schedule the things that make you happy. If through these lists you’ve decided on a career shift, come up with a game plan on achieving this. It’s the little things we do that get us where we do or don’t want to be. I figured out I wanted out of the traditional sense of an HR role. So I started writing and looking at roles that still utilize my skill set but in less of a standard way. I didn’t wake up after figuring this out with a new career ready and waiting for me. I’ve accepted taking the action and working towards what I want and implementing these changes every single day.

Now with more clarity around what I want, everything I do is based on where I want to end up and what i want my life to look like.I ask myself in every moment of choice, does this align with me and does this get me closer to where I want to be.

What I’m trying to get at is regardless of how lost you feel or off track you might be there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Embrace it. Spend some me time and think, then start writing it down. Take the small step of thinking about what actually makes you happy and start doing it!
